Musical Treats: Cooking with the Classics

For over a decade, the Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra has sponsored an educational musical assembly for all Ventura Unified School District 4th graders for over a decade. Entitled “Musical Treats: Cooking with the Classics,” this 50-minute program of classic symphonic masterpieces is tailored to appeal to elementary school students. Musical concepts are introduced by the program’s host, Chef Hillary/Harold Hornblower. Using references to food and cooking techniques, Chef Hornblower illustrates the musical concepts of tempo, rhythm, melody, and harmony as essential ingredients in music and recipes. The result is an interesting and vivid lesson and is a well-loved outing for VUSD students every year.
