From Paris and Vienna with Love showcases the talents of Mariana Smith, flute, and David Singer, clarinet, in selections widely recognized as cornerstones of flute and clarinet concert repertoire.
Mariana will perform Sonata for Flute and Piano by French composer Francis Poulenc, a piece in three movements that personifies the character of the composer: a disarming combination of charm and brashness, sophistication and slapstick.
The Sonata in F Minor was one of the last works written by the German composer Johannes Brahms, who lived most of his life in Vienna. It is a dramatic work in four movements, with sweeping mood changes – including a wistful and melodious second movement, and an exuberant finale. David, who came to CHICO from a superlative career in New York City, brings his exceptional talents to this demanding work.
Both Mariana and David will be accompanied by pianist Miriam Arichea, who is familiar to local audiences and has been performing with CHICO since 2004.
We are pleased to bring you this final program of our virtual concert season this spring. We hope you enjoy – just as our musicians have been buoyed by preparing these programs during these challenging times.
