PROGRAM

Overture, The Marriage of Figaro, K.492
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
1756-1791

  • Mozart's opera "The Marriage of Figaro," with its sparkling melodies, intricate plot, and lively characters, remains one of the most beloved works in the operatic repertoire. The overture, composed in 1786, serves as a captivating introduction to the drama and wit that unfold throughout the opera. With its brilliant orchestration and thematic richness, the overture encapsulates the essence of the opera's comedic and dramatic elements, setting the stage for the intrigue and hilarity that follow. The overture is structured in sonata form, a common classical form consisting of three main sections: exposition, development, and recapitulation. In the exposition, Mozart introduces the main themes that will be developed and elaborated upon later in the overture. These themes include the energetic and jovial motif associated with Figaro, the clever and mischievous character at the center of the opera, as well as the lyrical melodies that evoke the romantic entanglements of the story. The development section sees these themes undergo transformation and variation, showcasing Mozart's mastery of orchestration and thematic development. Finally, the recapitulation brings back the familiar themes in a triumphant and unified conclusion, signaling the imminent beginning of the opera itself. Mozart's overture is characterized by its vibrant orchestration, intricate counterpoint, and expressive melodies. The opening bars immediately grab the listener's attention with their bold and spirited fanfare, foreshadowing the lively and exuberant atmosphere of the opera to come. As the overture progresses, Mozart weaves together a tapestry of musical motifs, each representing a different character or aspect of the story. From the playful exchanges between Figaro and his beloved Susanna to the dramatic confrontations between Count Almaviva and his servants, the overture captures the full range of emotions and personalities that populate the opera. In addition to its musical richness, Mozart's overture is imbued with symbolism and imagery that reflect the themes and conflicts of the opera. The contrast between light and shadow represented musically through shifts in dynamics and orchestration, mirrors the moral ambiguities and social complexities of the characters' relationships. Likewise, the juxtaposition of major and minor keys conveys the tension between comedy and drama, highlighting the opera's blend of humor and pathos. Through these subtle musical gestures, Mozart invites the listener into the world of "The Marriage of Figaro," where love, jealousy, and forgiveness collide in a whirlwind of music and emotion. Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro Overture" stands as a masterpiece of the operatic repertoire, captivating audiences with its brilliance, wit, and emotional depth. From its spirited opening bars to its triumphant finale, the overture serves as a fitting prelude to the drama and spectacle of the opera itself, inviting listeners on a journey through the tangled web of love, desire, and deception. As the curtain rises on the stage, Mozart's music transports us to a world of passion and intrigue, where anything is possible in the pursuit of true love.

  • Composed in 1775 when Mozart was just 19 years old, the Mass in C Major, K. 220, affectionately known as the "Sparrow Mass" (due to the bird-like motifs in the Agnus Dei), stands as a remarkable testament to Mozart's early mastery of sacred music. Commissioned for the Salzburg Cathedral, this mass reveals Mozart's ability to infuse the traditional liturgical text with his distinctive musical language, blending solemnity with exuberance and reverence with joy. The Mass in C Major follows the standard structure of the Catholic Mass, consisting of five main sections: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. Each section is characterized by its own unique musical themes and textures, reflecting the mood and sentiment of the liturgical text. Mozart's skillful handling of choral and orchestral forces, coupled with his innate sense of drama and expression, results in a work of great beauty and emotional depth. From the grandeur of the opening Kyrie to the jubilant strains of the Gloria and the serene beauty of the Sanctus, Mozart's Mass in C Major is a showcase of his prodigious talent as a composer. The choral writing is particularly noteworthy, with intricate counterpoint and lush harmonies that showcase Mozart's mastery of vocal texture and color. The orchestral accompaniment provides a rich tapestry of sound, supporting and enhancing the choral melodies with its own distinctive timbres and rhythms. While firmly rooted in the traditions of the Catholic Mass, Mozart's Mass in C Major also exhibits elements of innovation and experimentation. For example, in the Gloria, Mozart employs a fugue-like structure, with overlapping vocal entries and intricate contrapuntal textures that add depth and complexity to the music. Similarly, the Credo features bold harmonic shifts and dramatic contrasts, reflecting the profound theological truths expressed in the text. Despite its relatively early composition date, Mozart's Mass in C Major has endured as one of his most beloved sacred works. Its exquisite beauty, expressive depth, and spiritual resonance continue to captivate audiences and performers alike, ensuring its place in the canon of classical choral music. Indeed, the "Sparrow Mass" stands as a testament to Mozart's enduring legacy as a master of sacred music, whose transcendent melodies and profound insights into the human condition continue to inspire and uplift generations of listeners. In conclusion, Mozart's Mass in C Major, K. 220, is a masterpiece of sacred music, combining the solemnity of the Catholic liturgy with the genius of Mozart's musical imagination. From its majestic opening chords to its triumphant final Amen, the "Sparrow Mass" is a testament to the power of music to elevate the soul and inspire the spirit. As listeners are transported on a journey of faith and devotion, they are reminded of the timeless beauty and enduring significance of Mozart's musical legacy.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

KuanFen Liu has profoundly shaped the performing arts community since her arrival in Ventura in 1999. She was instrumental in the formation of the Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra and the Channel Islands Choral Association – with both groups advancing her vision to nurture the next generation of musicians. As the Artistic Director and Conductor of both organizations since their inception, KuanFen has created unique concert series with innovative programming, commissioned new works from local composers, and initiated outreach and mentorship programs in Ventura County school districts.

The most recent example of KuanFen’s achievements occurred this past summer when KuanFen led a 108-member choir – comprised primarily of Ventura County singers aged 14 to 80 – and the New England Symphonic Ensemble in a performance at Carnegie Hall. The audience reaction was a resounding standing ovation, and program management at Carnegie Hall swiftly extended an invitation for KuanFen to return in 2024.

In addition to her conducting career, KuanFen is an Associate Professor in Music at CSU Channel Islands University where she teaches music theory, music history, and performance-related courses. It was through KuanFen’s academic pursuits and connections that she was able to spearhead a professional recording session for the Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra. Over two days in July 2022, the orchestra recorded two works at the legendary Newman Scoring State at Fox Studios: the Channel Islands Orchestral Suite (by Ashley Hoyer, premiered by CHICO in October 2019) and the Santa Monica Mountains (by Bevan Manson, scheduled to be performed by CHICO in December 2022).

Originally from Taiwan, KuanFen began music studies at the age of five. She is a graduate of the prestigious Eastman School of Music (M.M.), and Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California (D.M.A.). She has studied under William Dehning, William Weinert, Mark Gibson, and David Effron, and has participated in masterclasses and workshops with renowned conductors including Robert Shaw, Charles Dutoit, Helmuth Rilling, Joseph Flummerfelt, James Jordan and Dale Warland. KuanFen’s conducting career has enabled her to work with choirs and orchestras throughout the United States and worldwide, including Bangkok, Thailand, Auckland, New Zealand, and Taiwan.

A resident of Camarillo, KuanFen was the recipient of the 2016 Ventura Mayor’s Arts Awards for “Artist in the Community.”  She and her husband Jimmy Huang have a daughter Terilyn Huang.
